[1] Nutrition statements are based on gram-for-gram comparisons.

[2] Chia seeds are unique among superfoods because they can absorb 10 times their weight in water. When they are digested, they slowly but steadily release that same amount of water plus their super nutrition to your body. This makes them an excellent addition to any sports nutrition drink mix.

[3] When added to liquid, whole chia seeds start forming a neutral tasting soluble fiber gel that encompasses the entire seed. This chia gel slows down the rate at which complex carbohydrates are digested and absorbed into the body. The soluble fiber helps to stabilize blood glucose levels resulting in steady, sustained energy. In one study on diabetic patients, Dr. Vladamir Vuksan of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, found that long-term supplementation with chia (Salvia Hispanica) seeds aided in maintaining good glycemic and lipid control in people with well-controlled type 2 diabetes.

[4] Chia seeds contain many antioxidants. One of the top 5 antioxidants found in chia is Quercetin. According to a 2010 study published in the International Journal of Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, Quercetin “has important implications for enhancement of athletic and military performance,” after it was shown to increase both VO2 max and endurance capacity in human subjects, even without exercise training. “This apparent increase in fitness without exercise training may have implications beyond that of performance enhancement to health promotion and disease prevention.”

[5] The combination of protein, fiber and the bulking action of chia seeds when mixed with fluid all contribute to their satiating effects. Dr. Oz (the famous TV medical personality) dedicated two full show segments on how chia seeds can stop unhealthy cravings and aid in weight loss. Both segments also focused on how soaking chia seeds in water before drinking is the preferred method adding chia seeds to your diet.

[6] Similar to psyllium, the swelling action of chia seeds (when added to water) helps to cleanse and soothe the colon, and absorb toxins while lubricating and strengthening peristaltic action.
